Mandelieu-la-Napoule was settled by the Romans about 2000 years ago. The façade of the port is still dominated today by a magnificent fortress, which was destroyed and rebuilt several times over the past centuries. The Villeneuve family built it in the 14th century, before it became a glass factory in the 19th century. Acquired in 1918 by the American artist Henry Clews Jr. and his wife, the dilapidated property was renovated: its remarkable terraces that offer spectacular views of the Mediterranean, fountains and topiaries embellished the gardens. Today, the castle of Mandelieu-la-Napoule is classified as a historical monument.
